The ancient medieval village of Roccaraso was almost completely destroyed in WWII. The Nazis had made it their headquarters in 1943 and 98% of the village was eliminated during a tactical American bombing. The Nazis then retaliated with a devastating attack on the nearby village of Pietransieri killing 127 civilians. The only surviving building was the small baroque church of San Rocco.
